I am not a marker person. If I am doing coloring I prefer to use oil paints or color digitally.

I think a huge part of the cost would be dependent on how often the course 'meets' online. It's a twice-a-week for a month course, but how long are the courses on those days? Are the courses just an hour or 3 hours? Is it all streaming, or is there downloadable content as well?

I'm a little discouraged to see so many answers for $60-$80. If it meets twice a week for a month, then that's at most $80 for 8 classes, which breaks down to $10 a class. How is an instructor supposed to survive off that?

Yeah, the actual meetings would be once a week, downloadable stuff once a week, with me basically accessible through skype and email any time I'm home.

Yeah, part of asking people what they'd pay is finding out what I'd be willing to accept, LOL XD

Have you found your break even point yet? I.e., what are your fixed costs of putting on a course like this, and what are the variable costs that increase with each additional pupil?

How many hours in total will you put into the course media, and how many do you anticipate for the 1to1 sessions? Could you manage if you covered your costs and made just over minimum wage on top, pending growing popularity and prestige?

Can you soak up the startup costs with your personal finances, assuming that you don't have to REMAKE all of the material each time you do a course?

but, how much would YOU expect to pay?
Not caring about any of that stuff because you're just someone travelling the interwebs seeking lessons in copic. if you saw the above information, what cost would not make you think "OMFG THAT MUCH WHY?!"

In the end, I'm going to make it a balance of how much its worth, and how much people would be willing to pay.

Well, I don't know exactly how much I'D pay because I don't know what the market rate is. But, for instance, there's a "life drawing for animation" event hosted by the group I work with soon which is CA$40 for 4.5 hours intense tutorial. There's usually between 6 and 10 attendees if I remember, which makes $240-$400 for the event, shared by the tutor, venue and agency. The price is more for non-members of the agency.

If you can guarantee that I as a customer would get at least 4.5 hours of your time (including recorded lessons, but not including preparatory work you did in the background), that would seem reasonable. Of course, I don't actually know if Animated Yorkshire make any profit on these animation classes!

If you had $240 per course, assuming 6 pupils, how would that tie in with your previous reply?

well, everyone would have a gut reaction to how much they'd expect to pay for something.
a sort of instinctual value system.
Breaking even and all that is what I'll figure out after wards.
Just kinda trying for gut reactions now.

Problem with gut reactions is you get anywhere from $1 to $1000. Notice the wide range of prices in the top 3 poll choices ;P

yes but I can work out an average or a reasonable amount based on that and then my own research.
It's easier than just breaking it down from an all technical stand point and generally comes out with a fairer price for everyone.

No I haven't. I'm designing and pricing as I go. I don't want to design a class that would be ultimately too expensive because of what I plan to put in, vice versa... you know, trying to make 2 things work in tandem. I'm also trying to gauge what a normal class fee online is, without registering and attending classes. :/

I doubt there will be any prestige to worry about LMAO.
All this will be done on days off of full time day job as well.

The one on one stuff is where I'm sorta playing around with ideas. nothing in stone.

Yes i could, Since i'm not cutting back hours at work at all, and like you said some of it I only have to do once, and I'd think that I'd probably like to at least break even after doing one set of classes. I'm not really worried about breaking even at this point. there is not much material cost for me, just time.
Making the videos is going to be very time consuming for sure, but I think if I set the one on one time classes on a time limit I wouldn't eat up too much time..

The one on one part I'm either doing as an open class in live stream where it would be like q&a time. "fac to face" time sort of only they view my paper and I show them things...
this is where discussion would jsut happen.
The grading of assignments would be done behind the scenes I think...
working on all that :B
Right now I'm building a lesson plan for the recorded classes to get me started and then see where the open sessions would fit into that.
